CITYWIDE TOUR AIMS TO SPARK CHANGE IN A GENERATION
Dozens of Churches and Community Leaders Joining Together
(Detroit, MI) Several Detroit Area Pastors and community leaders are joining together for concerts meant to have a positive influence on hip hop fans of all ages in the Detroit Area. From August 28, 2010 to September 4, 2010 there will be a series of events that will culminate in a performance by Lecrae, a gospel rapper from Atlanta. The final concert will take place at Pastor Wendell Anthony’s Church, Fellowship Chapel. Zack Follett from the Detroit Lions will also share a short inspirational message.
The series begins with the March on Sin on August 28, 2010. The March will be 10am – 1pm from Woodward & West Grand Boulevard to Campus Martius.
Then Sunday, August 29th – Friday, September 3rd (excluding Thursday, September 2nd), there will be a series of free events where free school supplies will be given to the 1st 100 children in attendance. Many gospel rap and vocal artists will be featured such as Daniel Young, Larue Hill, Mahogany Jones, Loyalty and others. The Invasion concert will take place Saturday, September 4th, at Fellowship Chapel. It will feature Lecrae, Jay & Jay Soul, and Beacon Light.
Pastor and AM 1440 radio host Ovella Andreas will be sharing a message of hope for a non-violent year in the city of Detroit. “When people unite towards any good thing the possibilities are endless. We are uniting to save our communities with the focus on crime reduction.”
Researchers have found that inspirational rap music has a profound effect on today’s youth. In a qualitative research study conducted in the Greater Detroit area, African American adolescents reported how rap music facilitate their faith.
Dr. Pamela Martin, a North Carolina State University Psychology Professor, conducted the study in 2002 at over 25 Detroit Area Churches. She says “Adolescents in the study embraced rap lyrics that capture the prophetic witness and messages that align God’s transformative power with the needs of oppressed peoples.”
